What is the Union Database for Biofuels (UDB)?
The Union Database for Biofuels (UDB) is a centralized digital platform established by the European Commission to track, verify, and ensure the sustainability of biofuels, biogas, and biomass fuels across the EU. Designed to enhance traceability and fraud prevention, the UDB records the full lifecycle of biofuels, from feedstock origin to final consumption, ensuring compliance with the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) and sustainability certification schemes like RSB, ISCC, and REDcert. By providing real-time data access and transparency, the UDB helps regulators, suppliers, and auditors verify GHG emissions savings, feedstock authenticity, and compliance with EU sustainability criteria. The database - which went live in November 2024 and is expected to be fully enforced in May 2025 - will play a crucial role in supporting the decarbonization of transport while maintaining the integrity of the European renewable fuels market.
What is a UDB Access Point (AP)?
A UDB Access Point (AP) is an interface that allows companies (“economic operators”) to securely connect to the UDB for reporting and verifying biofuel transactions. It acts as a gateway for submitting, retrieving, and validating sustainability data, ensuring that all relevant information complies with EU regulations. Access Points are typically integrated into existing compliance systems, certification schemes, and voluntary sustainability programs to facilitate real-time data exchange and transparency. They help ensure that all transactions within the biofuels supply chain—from feedstock collection to fuel production and final use—are properly documented and meet the required sustainability standards.
